UNKNOWN CHARACTERS
"What am I looking at?" is one of the highest compliments/questions anyone could give me when asking about my photography. My favourite type of photography is abstract. I love to push the limits and have one stretch their own perception of reality.
One of my abstract photos for example...
Abstract Notions
There is so much of this world that is unknown and mysterious. These things often frighten us. They feel unnatural and there is usually massive resistance to let them in.
The response I often get to my photography is "I can't see it. It's out of focus. What is it?" And this is paired with perplexed and uneasy facial contortions! I adore this reaction. For the unseen and the unknown is something I'm very familiar with. For when I close my eyes, I can see so much more.
I enjoy bringing that forward for people to experience in this visual reality. I feel that in the abstract there is much to be unlocked and found. I find abstract visuals allow the opportunity to explore the unknown. To possibly expand one's own reality and concepts of what we think we know.
The Film - Creative Process
Synthuous Verses (Yes, I made up a word, that's not a spelling mistake!) was extremely fun to create and I'm looking forward to making more abstract films like this one. (I already have tons of footage to work with!!!)
Synthuous Verses' music was one improvised take and flowed so effortlessly. I've been learning my new keyboard and had not played with this particular synth till then. So, during the flow of the improvisation I was learning a ton of things about how this particular synth was working and how I could morph it as I went along. I also learned part way through that the left hand was different than the right hand keys. Therefore as I started to play with both hands, it changed the sound completely and I was thrilled to continue the flow with even more dimensions and textures.
Initially I had lost the recording as the computer froze and I had to shut it down before I could save it. Thankfully there was a backup file of the recording that I managed to locate. (I'm also learning how to use my recording software.) There are no vocals in this video. This was a creative journey in itself. I completed the film without vocals and was happy with it. It was my partner who wanted to see if I could come up with some vocals for it. I explored and played with this idea for a few weeks.
There were so many resistances that came up along the way. I got sick and my physical body broke down at the time. I couldn't sing. Then when I could, I was not happy with anything that was coming out. There were many emotions around playing with vocals to this track. I was afraid it wasn't good enough without vocals and thought it "must" need them. To please viewers. In the end, my initial intuition still prevailed. It's ready! But I'm also so glad I explored the possibilities both with the film and with myself!
I'm excited to share this with you and I loved the creative process as I learned a lot about myself and all the fears I have about sharing it. I am just so excited to continue to follow my passions and have fun exploring with myself, my partner, and with those of you who want to experience with me.
